Moving out is a big thing, and it's an even bigger thing when you're miles away from home. It's so exciting but also nerve-wracking at the same time, and you want to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible in what will be your new living area for the next academic year. Here are some top tips on how to feel more at home at uni.
1. Visit your new living space.
Chances are you've been to visit your accommodation for the academic year, so you'll know roughly what kind of room you're going to have. Take this time to really look around and pay attention to how much storage space you'll get, whether you need to purchase any drawers or a mirror, will you have a double or single bed. Really use this time to plan out where you'll want to put things and what you'll need to buy so that you're ready for move-in day. Some tech-savvy universities may have a virtual tour of the halls you'll be living in, and this is great to refresh your memory before you move in!
2. Choose a theme.
This may be the first time you've been able to decorate your own space and express who you are. Decide on a theme for your bedroom and go wild in the shops when picking things out. Choosing things like bedding and picture frames can really add some character!
3. Make it cosy!
Fairy lights. Lots of fairy lights. Making your room cosy is vital - Those halls of residence lights are very bright and clinical, and will probably give you a headache if they're on for too long! Hanging some warm toned fairy lights around the ceiling of your room really makes it snug!
4. Bring some elements from home with you
You can't really feel homely if you don't take some things from home with you, whether it's your favourite bed-side lamp or a childhood teddy bear, you're going to want to have something to make you feel a little less homesick! Be sure to print out lots of pictures, too. You're bound to have a notice board in your room, and if you don't, blutac does come off!!
